I created these within an hour! How AI Changed My Packaging Design Process?
I wanted to understand what actually changes when AI enters a traditionally 3D-heavy workflow. So I set a constraint: design a complete package visual in one hour, using AI as a core collaborator rather than a final polish tool.
  • Time constraint: 1 hour
  • Tools used:
  • text-to-image AI(Jimeng AI),
  • ChatGPT

The Traditional Way I Designed Packaging
Before AI, my packaging workflow relied heavily on 3D tools like Cinema 4D(photography is another topic!). A typical process looked something like this:

  • Modeling boxes from scratch
  • UVs, materials, lighting setups
  • Camera, render settings, iterations
  • Time cost (hours → days)

This approach offers precision and control, and it’s still essential for production-ready assets. But it also means that a large portion of time is spent before creative exploration really begins. Lighting tests, camera adjustments, and scene setup often take hours before a clear visual direction emerges.

Designing a Package in One Hour Using Text-to-Image AI

Step 1: Generating Mockups with Text-to-Image AI

Adjusted reference image intensity

Combined one box + one cookie package in a single scene

Used AI to explore Composition and Scene context

Step 2: Compositing and Refining in Photoshop

After generating the mockups, I into Adobe Photoshop for refinement. Placing my package designs onto the AI-generated mockups. to maintain images accuracy

Exploring Composition Through Prompts

Control their scale and spatial relationship

Experiment with display arrangements and lighting styles

Side-by-Side Reflection: Cinema 4D vs AI Prompting

Traditional 3D (Cinema 4D)
   •    Full control
    •    High setup cost
    •    Slower iteration
    •    Best for production-ready assets
AI Workflow

 •    Faster exploration
   •    Lower technical friction
   •    Less granular control
   •    Strong for concepting & mood finding

Final Thoughts

Designing a packaging visual in one hour wasn’t about chasing speed. It was about understanding how text-to-image AI reshapes the design process—from building everything by hand to directing outcomes through language.

As designers, our value has always been in judgment, taste, and clarity of intent. AI doesn’t remove that responsibility. It makes it impossible to hide from it.
